Iyengar Yoga For Beginners

I used to be a total vinyasa junkie, but I am fully converted to Iyengar Yoga now, both in my practice and in my teaching. Why is Iyengar yoga the best, you might ask? Well, a million reasons, but it all comes down to method. B.K.S. Iyengar developed a method of teaching yoga that allows me to teach anyone, and it allows me to teach beginners especially well. This method is clear, progressive, therapeutic, challenging & intelligent.

Let me say a little more.

Yoga for beginners isn’t supposed to just be advanced poses made easier. And beginners come in all shapes, sizes and with varying needs. Some of us are looking to yoga as a way to relieve stress. Some of us are considering starting yoga as a way of regaining mobility. Others might just be looking for movement.

Wherever you’re coming from, B.K.S. Iyengar actually developed a system to teach the form of yoga most beneficial to that person, with their particular needs and circumstances. The method isn’t about Down Dogs (this is about as far away from a beginner pose as you can get) or getting people into a shape we think is the epitome of yoga.

Instead, it’s about teaching students about their body, how to build the foundation of mobility and strength that maybe one day leads to “harder” poses. But maybe it doesn’t. Yoga isn’t about the poses, it’s about how the poses—done correctly—begin to transform us: our mobility, agility and so much more. So, where to begin?

So, where to begin? B.K.S. Iyengar has a well established “Institute” that has locations throughout the world. Maybe there’s one in your city or somewhere nearby. Can I do Iyengar yoga at home? Yes! Many of them have virtual options now because of the pandemic, and quite a few offer free online classes to make it easier for you to try out.  Personally, I offer iyengar-style yoga classes online for free a 7 day free trial that I’d love for you to explore. I’d love for you to try the interactive classes (at least to start), so that we can build a rapport, I can learn a little about you, and I can give you specific feedback as you begin this journey.

No matter your age, shape, or motivation, I wholeheartedly believe the Iyengar Method is your best portal into Yoga. Please feel free to reach out to me directly at amy@wellbywolfe.com if you have questions or just want a little more guidance or information.
