Can I Go On A Yoga Retreat Solo?

Going Solo: Tackling a Yoga Retreat By Yourself

Let me assure you upfront: Yes, you absolutely can go on a yoga retreat solo! Many people are hesitant but here you can read personal experiences of people who loved them. Don't let fear or nerves stop you from having this potentially life-changing experience.

Listen To Your Intuition

As with trying any new activity, listen closely to your inner guidance when choosing a retreat location and facility. Make sure it's somewhere you feel completely safe and taken care of. Trust your intuition here! A good retreat will have things like security, separate sleeping quarters for men and women, and trained staff available 24/7. Many cater specifically to solo female travelers

Expect a Mixed Group

Understand that while some attendees may come with friends, most retreats see plenty of solo travelers. You certainly won't be the only one navigating this solo! And shared experiences have a magical way of bonding total strangers. You'll likely make soulmate-level connections and lifelong friendship.

Step outside your comfort zone

Part of the yoga philosophy is getting comfortable with being uncomfortable. And yes, attending solo may make you feel out of your element at first. But allowing yourself to be vulnerable often unlocks tremendous growth. See if you can lean into any awkwardness and use it as a chance to unlock something inside. After all, life is about learning and growing.

Structure varies

Every retreat has a unique structure and set of activities. Many incorporate yoga sessions, meditations, group sharing circles, nature excursions, massage, healthy meals and free time for relaxation, journaling, or creative activities like art or dance. Be sure to do some research to find a structure/theme that speaks to you, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Expect a mix of group experiences and solo time to digest it all. And while group sharing is encouraged, it's always optional for any introverts out there. You can observe silently until you feel a level of safety and trust. This is your experience to curate.

Take Time To Integrate

When your retreat concludes and you return home, be sure to schedule in some alone time to process your experiences before jumping back into regular life. Even a half-day of journaling or creative play can help "seal in" your transformation.

Trust that the right retreat at the right time has a way of changing our whole trajectory in the most magical way imaginable. And believe me, you’ll know which one to go on. I’m always amazed that even when people know they want to go on a retreat with me, there’s something about Bali or there’s something about the French Alps or there’s something about the Azores that just calls to them.

Please remember that you absolutely deserve this gift of self-care and spiritual renewal.
